The European Union’s RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU – Restriction of Hazardous Substances) is an environmental regulation aiming to limit the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. According to this directive, products placed on the EU market must not exceed established limit values for lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (Cr⁶⁺), PBB, PBDE, and specific phthalate derivatives [DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP].
The following product categories are covered under Annex I of the RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU):
- Large household appliances
- Small household appliances
- IT and telecommunications equipment
- Consumer equipment
- Lighting equipment
- Electrical and electronic tools (non-industrial)
- Toys, leisure and sports equipment
- Medical devices
- Monitoring and control instruments
- Automatic dispensers
- Other electrical and electronic equipment
In order for electronic products to be placed on the EU market, CE marking is mandatory, and RoHS compliance is an integral part of this marking process. Accordingly, manufacturers, importers, and distributors are required to conduct RoHS conformity analyses for their products, carry out the necessary laboratory tests, and prepare technical documentation in accordance with the relevant legislation.
